Table 12: Crossed Valves

Crossed Valves is the FRAGILE table of this free online pinball game: a hit with the wrong colour does not just bounce, it spawns a new bubble on the board. The Mother Bubble blows in two diamonds of small bubbles, a star of bumpers shakes the top, and clean colour choices are everything.

How the table is laid out

A star of 5 pop bumpers fills the top: cyan, coral, yellow, cyan and coral. The CASCADE ramp climbs the right side, drop-target banks flank both sides of the mid-field and a permanent rescue post stands between the flippers.

Coloured rings: cyan on the lower left, coral on the lower right and yellow in the middle centre. The big bubbles are cyan on the middle left (2 shells), coral on the middle right (2 shells), yellow in the lower centre (2 shells) and a second cyan in the middle centre (1 shell).

The Mother Bubble blows in two diamond-shaped clusters of small bubbles, each hanging from a gold-ring anchor, with a bomb bubble among them.

The objective

FRAGILE: pop every big bubble and both diamonds before the clock runs out, knowing that a wrong-colour hit on a big bubble spawns one extra bubble (never more than 1 extra at a time). Choose colours with a top lane (flippers rotate them), a ring, CASCADE or the two-flipper swap. Pop an anchor to drop its diamond.

Strategy, step by step

  1. Check the ball's colour before every flip at a big bubble. On this table a bad hit adds work, so a swap with both flippers is cheaper than a guess.
  2. Open Crossed Valves on its only single-layer target, the cyan one in the middle centre just over the yellow port; a single clean hit and the colour stays useful for the middle left.
  3. If a wrong hit spawns an extra bubble, pop it straight away while you know its colour: only one extra can exist at a time, so clearing it keeps the board small.
  4. CASCADE arms the ball to burst both shells of its next target; point it at the coral bubble on the middle right to skip a risky second hit.
  5. Both diamonds on Crossed Valves share one bomb. Detonate it when it sits next to an anchor and the gold ring is exposed for the drop.

How to get 3 stars

QUICK: at least a quarter of the clock left at the end. NO BALL LOST: no drains (each costs 5 seconds). WHOLE CLUSTER: drop a diamond by popping its gold-ring anchor. Spawned bubbles slow you down, so clean hits matter most for QUICK.

Common mistakes

  • Letting bumper rebounds carry the ball into a big bubble of another colour; each bounce like that can spawn a new bubble.
  • Ignoring a spawned bubble. It stays on the board and must be popped before the table ends.
  • On Crossed Valves, carrying a yellow ball up through the single-layer cyan target in the middle centre: that bad touch spawns an extra bubble.

The first table takes one minute.

The Primordial Bubble takes a little longer.
